CAR-PD (Content Area Reading-Professional Development)
Content Area Reading -Professional Development is training that allows content-area teachers to provide the reading intervention--as a part of their content-area classes--for students who read fluently, but achieved Level 2 on FCAT Reading. Teachers should have completed the training before teaching such a class.
The training is 150 hours: 60 hours of an FL-DOE-approved reading strategies course (Listed on the Staff Development page of the District website under “Begin the first course of CARPD”). This is followed by a face-to-face CAR-PD Academy worth another 60 hours. The final piece is a 30-hour practicum offered on-line through BEACON Educator. No extra endorsement appears on a teacher’s certificate once he/she has completed this training. If a teacher wishes to continue on and receive the reading endorsement, another course is being developed by Just Read, Florida! to do that (CAR-PD ).
Some teachers have already completed part of the reading endorsement coursework. The only part of that which can cross over and become part of the CAR-PD is the reading strategies course off the approved list (see above).
