Today marked a powerful step forward for student-athlete safety in our community as partners at PanCare officially launched the first EKG screenings for athletes at Deane Bozeman School. This important initiative comes ahead of the July 1 implementation of the Second Chance Act (SB 1030), which will require all new high school athletes to receive an EKG as part of their pre-participation physical, helping identify potential heart conditions early.
The press conference brought together a strong network of support, including members of the BDS Board, Senator Jay Trumbull, and generous sponsors, Florida Power & Light, St. Joe Community Foundation, and Florida Blue, whose investment is making this life-saving program possible. In a meaningful kickoff moment, Superintendent McQueen became the very first individual to receive an EKG, symbolizing the community’s shared commitment to student health and safety.
This initiative is rooted in remembrance and purpose. The Second Chance Act was inspired by the tragic loss of Chance Gainer, a Port St. Joe High School football player who passed away unexpectedly last year. His story has sparked a movement to better protect young athletes, and today’s launch represents more than a milestone; it is a promise to our students and families that their safety will always come first.
