Bay District Schools campuses were filled with a sea of purple today as students, staff, and families came together to celebrate Purple Up Day, a special part of the Month of the Military Child. Across the district, schools hosted a variety of activities, from morning celebrations and school-wide spirit days to special recognitions and student-led events, all centered around honoring the more than 3,000 military-connected students who call BDS home.

Purple Up Day is a nationwide initiative that encourages communities to wear purple as a visible sign of support for military children. The color purple represents all branches of the military, symbolizing unity and the shared sacrifices made by service members and their families. In Bay District Schools, that support runs deep. As one of only a handful of Purple Star Districts in Florida—with 100 percent of schools earning the Purple Star designation—BDS remains committed to creating a welcoming, supportive environment for military families at every campus.

Throughout the day, schools found meaningful and creative ways to celebrate. Students and staff wore purple from head to toe, decorated campuses with banners and signage, and participated in events that highlighted the unique experiences of military children. Many schools also took time to recognize the challenges military-connected students face, including frequent moves, new schools, and time spent apart from loved ones during deployments.

“These students serve too,” is a message often shared during the Month of the Military Child, and it was on full display across Bay County today. Purple Up Day serves as a reminder that behind every service member is a family making sacrifices right alongside them and that schools and communities play a vital role in supporting their success.

Bay District Schools extends its gratitude to every student, staff member, school, and community partner who participated in Purple Up Day. Through these efforts, BDS continues to demonstrate what it means to truly support military families and ensure every student feels seen, valued, and connected.

As the Month of the Military Child continues, Bay District Schools remains proud to stand alongside its military-connected students, today and every day, while continuing the work of putting the “A” back in Bay.
